A homage to the Drake on Scuderia Ferrari’s anniversary, founded 90 years ago as Alfa Romeo's racing department. For the occasion, the car on which the emblem with the prancing horse appeared for the first time will be on display. The programme also includes a conference on the extraordinary story of the Modenese gentleman driver Lotario Rangoni Machiavelli .
The Museo Storico Alfa Romeo in Arese was present at the Motor Valley Fest - the event dedicated to the world of motorsports scheduled to take place in Modena from 16 to 20 May - with a tribute to Enzo Ferrari, on Scuderia Ferrari’s 90th anniversary. A driver, dealer and highly influential person on the upper floors of the Portello, Enzo Ferrari established the limited company "Scuderia Ferrari" on November 16, 1929. Its purpose was "to buy Alfa Romeo branded racing cars and participate with them in the races included in the National Sporting Calendar and in the calendar of the National Association Automobil Clubs". Thus, the Scuderia in fact became Alfa Romeo’s racing department. At the Motor Valley Fest, the Museo Storico Alfa Romeo will be exhibiting two cars whose history is closely linked to Enzo Ferrari: the RL Targa Florio, with which he raced as a driver in the 1924 edition of the famous Sicilian competition, and the 8C 2300 Mille Miglia on which the Scuderia Ferrari emblem was displayed for the first time, at the Spa-Francorchamps 24-Hour race in 1932. After the Motor Valley Fest, the 8C 2300 Mille Miglia will be exhibited at the Ferrari Museum in Maranello as part of the "90 Years" exhibition, together with another car from Alfa Romeo’s historical collection: the GP Type B "Aerodinamica" from 1934.
Within the framework of the Motor Valley Fest, the cars were exhibited in the courtyard of the eighteenth-century Palazzo Rangoni Machiavelli, in the heart of Modena’s historic town centre. The choice of location is not accidental, as it ideally represents the link between the Alfa-enthusiast Ferrari and the company that the Drake founded in Maranello. Marquis Lotario Rangoni Machiavelli, a gentleman driver from Modena, took part in several races behind the wheel of different Alfa Romeos, which were prepared and adapted for him by Enzo Ferrari. And it was the Marquis himself who bought - and drove at the 1940 Mille Miglia - one of the two vehicles of the model created by Enzo Ferrari after he left Alfa Romeo and before he founded the company that would bear his name, in 1947: the 815, which was branded Auto Avio Costruzioni (the other vehicle was sold to Alberto Ascari). The bond between Alfa Romeo, Enzo Ferrari and the Marquis has been further explored during a conference entitled "Ferrari Alfista: the extraordinary story of Lotario Rangoni Machiavelli", scheduled for Friday 17 May at 6.30 pm in the courtyard of Palazzo Rangoni Machiavelli, in via Farini 12 in Modena. Participants included Lorenzo Ardizio, curator of the Museo Storico Alfa Romeo in Arese; Claudio Rangoni Machiavelli, grandson of the driver Lotario Rangoni Machiavelli; Lorenzo Boscarelli, president of the Italian National Association for automotive history (A.I.S.A.).
